Opcodes 32–63 (L32–L63) are mutable rules stored directly in the soup. Executing DEF_LEX (op 30) binds a Lexicon slot to a 4–7 byte soup address. Overwriting or mutating those soup bytes alters the rule for all organisms calling it.

BEDAU–PACKARD SHADOW COMPARISON

The Shadow World runs synchronously with the exact same population size and mutation rates, but with selection randomised (births and deaths chosen uniformly by PRNG, independent of genome). Components whose real activity exceeds the 95th-percentile shadow cutoff are adaptively significant.

Caveat: A finite simulation run can only suggest, never prove, sustained unbounded open-ended evolution.
PROGRAMMABLE INSTRUMENT PROBES (TIER 4.15)

Write custom measurement probes over the live soup and genebank. Probes are saved inside the self-replicating HTML file and plotted on Oscilloscope #4.

Tier 5 Batch Experiment Mode: Runs headless batches comparing Lexicon ON vs Lexicon OFF across seeds and compares Real vs Shadow activity.
Reference 12-Run Experiment Findings (6 Seeds × Lexicon ON/OFF, 100,000 ticks/run = 1,200,000 ticks): Real-world cumulative evolutionary activity exceeded the neutral Shadow World by 6.4× to 10.1× across all 12 runs (yielding 6 to 30 adaptively significant genotypes per run). All 6 Lexicon-ON runs evolved all 32 Lexicon slots and produced 15 to 20 Lexicon-dependent lineages (8,523–10,086 Lexicon executions/run). However, Shannon diversity plateaued between 4.865 and 7.037 bits after 25k–45k ticks across all 6 seeds—honestly classifying the 64 KiB substrate dynamics as BOUNDED rather than sustained unbounded evolution.
